photograph archive

The Photograph Archive holds a vast collection of photographs, negatives, slides and digital images. It is made up of two parts:

Main Photograph Archive

This includes original material that we have the rights to reproduce. Items are being scanned and added to the Photograph Store, where copies can be purchased. Our policy is to keep each photographer’s work together, so you’ll find views from across the UK and a selection of overseas locations.

New images are added every month, and many more photographers’ collections are being prepared.

Reference Collection

This section includes photographs from a variety of photographers and collections, all featuring views from the railways of southern England. Many of the images are unique, while others are from sources where reproduction is not appropriate. The collection is a valuable resource for researchers and can be viewed at the Archive by appointment. In some cases, low-resolution copies may be provided for private research use only.

One of the largest reference collections we hold is the extensive London, Brighton & South Coast Railway photograph albums compiled by L. G. Marshall.
